“Healthy” Food Comparison

So a few days ago I was out food shopping and I normally do check labels so this was not out of the norm for me.

When we got to picking up some on the go breakfast options – something that can be mixed up as a shake we had a look at two well known brands. Both are advertised as healthy options for active people. For me the sugar content in anything is always what I look at first, 1 – because SUGAR and 2 – South Africa is supposed to be implementing a sugar tax soon so foods with more sugar in will soon become more expensive.

I must admit I wasnt all that excited when I saw the sugar content of the Future Life (bottom Pic) as it does boast on the front of the box as having only 1 and a half teaspoons of sugar per serving.

I always look at the content per 100g – gives you an idea of what percentage of the product and/or serving is sugar

Future Life comes in at 15.8 – So 15.8% sugar (not Glycaemic Carbohydrates – Total Suagr – pure sugar….)

Jungle’s Oat based cereal comes in at a wopping 27.5% sugar…. #shock #horror #gasps

In my mind Jungle Oats would have been the healthier of the two choices but it seems Future Life have taken great steps in reducing the sugar content of their cereal and made it a bit more appropirate as a breakfast food. Jungle seems to have some work to do.

Now I still wouldn’t give either of these to a child before school where they will be required to sit still and listen for a minimun of two hours before being allowed to run around again but I might just reach for a scoop of Future Life to mix with a protein shake before or even after a workout.

As a rule of thumb I try to stick to foods that have a “Glycaemic Carbohydrate, of which total sugar” value of 10g per 100g or lower (Its hard!! For weight loss its even better to stick to 5g per 100g or less)
